In Home Newborn Session | San Rafael | Steph, Trevor, Jack and Desmond

An early Saturday morning at Steph's house in San Rafael, I was greeted with an enthusiastic Jack who was playing pretend as a firefighter. Desmond was resting peacefully in the living room amongst all of the action, getting used to the giggles and exclamations from his big brother.

Dez gets the award for most newborn yawns in a session.

My understanding of the 4th trimester deepens after every newborn shoot. It's a totally different pace than family documentary or even maternity. Time is standing still. There's a noticeable calmness and intimacy in the air. My goal is always to preserve this feeling. To take a mixture of portraits and environmental pictures so that a family is transported back in time when they revisit their images.

Tiny hands.

Desmond may also win the award for chubbiest cheeks.

I love an environmental shot like this. And the memory of burping little Desmond, which Steph mentioned is an essential piece of this breasting journey.

Let's hear it for the partners who are an amazing support during the 4th trimester.

I don't usually do posed newborn photos but I couldn't resist taking the opportunity when Dez was out cold. Steph moved him from her chest to this spot on the bed for a simple, dreamy portrait.
